We live in an increasingly digital world where human activity generates an enormous amount of data. The advanced analysis of all this information is helping to change and improve our society: from highlighting zones at risk of flooding to analyzing levels of illiteracy in remote areas and predicting the spread of diseases such as Zika. We call this Big Data for Social Good, a series of projects and initiatives based on data that acts as a driving force towards the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN for 2030.
In this event, LUCA (Telefonica’s data unit) is creating a meeting point and a space to debate one of the most relevant application of the social aspect of Big Data: preparing for natural disasters and preventing climate change. When Mother Nature reveals herself, we find ourselves facing incredibly uncertain times, where peoples’ health and quality of life is at risk. However, analysis and decision-making based on data can allow us to have better responses and create more efficient plans of action for future catastrophes and the effects of climate change.
Related to this idea, we have brought together important figures from the Big Data for Social Good community. These experts will help us to explain and bring to life the benefits of these projects, and show the growing importance of collaboration between public bodies, private companies, NGOs and academic institutions. Together we can be ready for a wild world.
